It’s the course I wish I could have gone through when I was three years into my career, feeling restless and misdirected.
Back then, I “should” have been happy.
I had the good title, the stable salary, and the LinkedIn feed that looked like success. I had checked all the boxes: prestigious degree, high-growth company, and working 50+ hours a week.
On the surface, I was doing everything society told me I should want.
I had a clear path to seniority.
I was making enough money to pay my rent and start saving.
I was “learning valuable skills” in a fast-paced environment.
This was the “ambition lifestyle” the mentors were talking about, right? The one where you just keep your head down for 10 years and eventually become an executive.
Nah.
That wasn’t reality; reality was harsh.
The harsh reality was that the work was never-ending, I had zero emotional connection to the outcomes, and I was quickly drowning in projects that built my company’s future, not mine. I wasn’t enjoying any of my hard-won “success.”
The harsher reality was: Despite dedicating 50+ hours a week and getting good performance reviews, I felt the sickening realisation that I was building the wrong skills on the wrong career path. I was spending my energy on tasks that were draining (my Competent Strengths) instead of tasks that built high-value expertise (my Energising Strengths).
The harshest reality was: I had accidentally created a high-paying, shiny-title version of the hamster wheel, because at least the old 8-5 was honest about its bureaucratic limits. Now, my entire future was being decided by the senior leaders’ mood and the school’s inertia.
And a deep and quiet part of me felt unfulfilled and restless.
That part of me was keeping me up at night, murmuring: “This can’t be it. Is this the right industry? Am I wasting my best years on the wrong problem?”
For a long time, I told that little voice to hush, to be quiet, to be grateful for the salary.
That was my first mistake.
Mistakes that kept me stuck for years, desperately clinging to processes and waiting for a promotion to magically solve my internal conflict:
Mistake 1: Allowing the schools’ needs to violate my Core Values (Day 2).
Mistake 2: Focusing on building competence in draining tasks instead of Energising Strengths (Day 3).
Mistake 3: Waiting for the next promotion cycle instead of building a strategic 3-Horizon Roadmap (Day 4) based on my own vision.
Because in that year that followed, something finally changed. I stopped trusting the education ladder and started building my own strategic blueprint. And you can too.
